These wines are produced from the vast expanses of vineyards in southwestern France, which cover eleven départements and account for 170,000 hl of production per year, most of which is red. There are many varieties authorized for use including some local grapes. Tannat and Négrette for the reds and Muscadelle and Len de Lel for the whites are the most representative examples of these.
