A VDQS appellation since 1984, the Fiefs Vendéens vineyards are quite unexpected in a region that is known for its livestock and large-scale farming. Though Vendée is primarily characterized by its pasture lands, its sunniest, best-drained hills are reserved for its vineyards. Some of these are located in the south of the département, not far from Charentes. The brown soils of the Fiefs Vendéens appellation rest on schistous limestone and are planted with Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Pinot Noir for the reds and Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay for the whites. Its whites and rosés are fresh, light and fragrant while the reds offer notes of cherry and raspberry and are enjoyed for their liveliness and youthfulness. Their slight firmness is perfectly balanced by their aromatic intensity.
